Esher

A little bit of history

Originally a Saxon settlement, Esher appears in the Domesday Book of 1086. Transport links have always been key to its prosperity, firstly as a stagecoach stop on the London–Portsmouth road in the 17th century and later with the advent of the railway in 1838, which opened the town up for commuters to the capital.

Esher has connections to the British music scene, with both George Harrison of the Beatles and Maurice Gibb of the Bee Gees calling the town home during their respective heydays in the 1960s and 70s.

The number of Londoners buying homes outside the capital doubled last year from what it was in 2013 - and Esher was the top place for families to move to. With an average price more than double that of the second placed town - Brentwood in Essex - Esher’s homes, averaging out at £860,000, attracted the most families who wanted to get out of London, as revealed in research by residential agents Hamptons International.

Johnny Morris, head of research at Hamptons International, said: “Esher certainly has geography on its side - it’s within the M25 and sits within the half-an-hour sweet spot of train commutes.

“It’s also an area well established in Londoners’ minds, with good schools and green space.

“So for Londoners looking to move out but keep ties with the capital, it offers a great midpoint between town and country.”

The news came with research that found Londoners bought 58,000 homes outside the capital in 2014, 50% more than in 2013 and the highest number since 2007.

Figures released in August showed that Esher was the fourth most valuable town in England in terms of house prices.

Expert Interview with Iris Kouneni from aThink Architects

Tell us a little about your background and how AThink came to be established? I was always interested in residential design. The idea of improving the everyday life of a family through my designs is very intriguing. I have worked for many high end architectural practices in Surrey, and I reached a point were I felt that I could give so much more to my clients. We founded aThink Architects with my husband, who is also a registered architect, because we wanted to create bespoke designs around the clients’ family and not box standard solutions.

How early in the buying process would you advise a client to get in touch?

As early as possible. We work with a lot of our clients from the day their offer is accepted, as the concept design stage is very important and it can take weeks or even months to get to the final design. One can also reach out to us if they are not sure if the property they are interested in can accommodate all their needs. We will then do a desktop study on the property and advise on if we think it is the right property for their family.

What’s the process you take customers through from that first enquiry?

The first step is to arrange a Home Design Consultation, which you can book in our website, where we do a desktop study of the property beforehand and come to the meeting prepared to discuss local planning regulations, planning history and design options. Once we are instructed, we do a site meeting to learn a bit more about the clients and refine the brief. We will develop different concept ideas and present them using 2D drawings, precedent images and 3D sketches. We also use Virtual Reality videos, so the clients can see their renovated and extended or new house before they decide on the final design. Finally, we will submit the planning application and liaise with the planners until the decision. We then prepare the Building Regulation drawings, help with the tender and do contract administration. We prefer to take each project from start to finish.

What is the future of architecture?

Our team is very passionate about green home architecture. Sustainable design underpins all of our new build and home improvement projects. Designing green homes is not just about reducing carbon emissions and installing clever technologies. Sustainable buildings provide a high level of occupant comfort while using very little energy for heating and cooling. They are built with meticulous attention to detail and rigorous design and construction. It all starts at the very early stages of designing and involves fundamental architectural principles such as orientation, ventilation and deep knowledge of sustainable materials. It is the future of Architecture.

What aspect of your work gives you the greatest satisfaction? I like the idea of improving people’s life, but if I could narrow it down into one moment it is the moment I see the clients faces when they see the final design. When I can see in their eyes and smiles that I have encapsulated in my design what they were dreaming of and hopefully a bit more.

Tell us a little background about your architectural practice?

We absolutely do! This is one of the things Mike loves the most about the practice. Factors such as budget, space, and lifestyle aren’t roadblocks, but instead invite a fantastic opportunity for true creativity to flourish. Mike has long since recognised the joy that the

architectural process brings and to be there at the start of the process exploring every possibility is key when purchasing a property. Helping clients to understand all their options at the start with minimal to no cost involved, builds a relationship which has proven to be very successful.

What are the most popular requests from your clients?

The most frequent request from clients comes from the question “Can we afford to create our vision for additional space for our dream home within our budget?” Every client wants to realise the maximum but within reason. Matching the two is what we do!

Mike’s hands-on approach by visiting the property and meeting his clients creates understanding on lifestyle, vision and the culture behind the project. Providing multiple iterations with ideas of the budget needs, helps our clients decide on their best planning solution.

Is there a project that you are most proud of?

Mike says that there is always an element of excitement that makes him proud of the successful completion of a project. Whether it’s a loft extension for the arrival of a new family member, reinventing the old to new or designing multi-unit residential development schemes, it’s the reward of a satisfied customer that makes him most proud.

Interview with Ivo from Alpha Floor Sanding.

Please tell us a little about how you started your flooring company. My father started our family business in Bulgaria back in 1985. He began teaching me how to restore floors when I was 14 years old. Every day after school, I was helping him with the projects. In 2013 I decided to come to the UK on holiday. I liked the people, the energy that London has and chose to live here for a while before I knew that most of the houses here have wood floors in them. Everything matched, and I started my own flooring business 8 years ago.

What is the thing you enjoy most about working with wooden floors.

That is easy- the transformation of an old wood floor. To restore something installed by someone 100-200 or even 300 years ago and to make it look like new again, I can say that I have done thousands of floors in my life, and I am still excited when I am applying that first coat of oil on a freshly sanded floor.

Which kind of wood do you recommend both for beauty and practical usage?

There are advantages and disadvantages to each species of wood. It depends on the use of the floor, where the clients will use it and how they will maintain it. You can buy the best and most expensive fork in the world, but it won’t be any good to eat soup with it.

Is there a project you worked on that you’re most proud of?

We have done many floors during the years, some of them for celebrities, but to be honest, I am proud of each job we have done. The smile on the client’s face is what makes us proud.

What advice would you give to a client who is unsure to choose carpet or wood for their living space?

In my opinion, the carpet is clean only on the day of installation. After that, no matter how much you clean it, it will never be as clean as mopped hard floor.

What has been some of most successful projects to date?

Working across not only the UK but globally has allowed AJI to be a part of many award winning private and commercial properties. It would be impossible to pick just one. National Trust - Claremont Landscape Garden

There’s plenty of family fun to be had on a visit to Claremont Landscape Garden. From climbing Stoney Hill, to exploring our two play areas, Claremont is a great place for families. Claremont used to be the playground of princesses and now it can be yours too. Our play area is great for young children who are learning to explore and become more adventurous. It’s located right by our Grab and Go Hut, so you can relax with a cup of coffee while the children play. We also have our Badger’s Basecamp, a den building site on Stoney Hill, perfect for older children.

Skywalk Adventure

Two courses, two heights full of zip lines, tyre swings, barrel crawls, rickety bridges and loads more for an adventurous family day out. Across the angled indie bridge to the hanging vines where some serious tightrope stepping will come in handy! Zip across again to the next burma bridge (take in the spectacular views from here!) over the island crossing and finally the rickety bridge to arrive back on home soil.

Thames Ditton Miniature Railway

We have been in existence for 80 years and at our current site since 1948. Our railway is well known and locally it is referred to as the Thames Ditton Miniature Railway, and this is where we operate our two independent railways. The railway is operated entirely by unpaid volunteers, and we hold regular public open days at the railway. Admission to the site is free, single, day and family tickets may be purchased for those who wish to ride the trains. Most of the model locomotives seen at the railway are privately owned, being built and operated by its members, however the society does own a number of locomotives banqueted over the years. The society also owns most of its passengerrolling stock needed to operate its two railways. We pride ourselves on our facilities that we have built up over the years, and the service and facilities that we provide for our visitors and members alike.

Tell us a little about how you gained your landscaping expertise?

Since I was a teenager helping my father building fences,trimming olives trees, mandarins, lemons, hedges, small brick walls,patios and since then I never stopped. I’ve worked with few different landscaping companies in Surrey initially then picked up the best things from each of them before starting on my own. With right attitude and hard work I continue to make people happy.

What aspect of your work gives you the most satisfaction?

The reaction of my client when the project is finish I something thatyou cannot forget. It makes al the hard labour worthwhile.

Is there a project you are most proud of?

All of them I must say as they all are different and challenging, I’m always looking forward to see what will come next.

What advice would you give to a homeowner who wants to maximise their outdoor space?

With my experience I have noticed that people plant more than they should do or put more things in the garden. I would advise keep it as simple as possible and things that you do not use anymore, be disciplined and take it away.

When a Hamptons client invites you to their space what’s the usual process?

It’s very simple, first I hear what they would like to do in their garden, I suggest few ideas what I think might look better, together we agree a plan of action and a price package and take it from there.

Interview with Stellar Interiors

Why should people appoint an interior designer instead of managing their own project?

Firstly from a design point of view our team are experienced in what it takes to pull together a design - introducing new ideas, products and concepts as well as making sure the functionality is all there too.

Secondly, from a project point of view - we are experienced at running full build projects – from initial design ideas, technical drawings, working with architects and contractors, setting budgets and managing finances and running the timelines. We are able to provide a seamless service to our clients – saving them the time and stress of managing works.

What type of projects get you most excited?

Working with great clients is the best part of any project – people these days are savvy and stylish, they know what they want but trust us to help push boundaries and introduce them to new ideas and products, as well as bring a scheme together for them. So for us, it is really exciting when we work with people who put their trust in us to produce something extraordinary. Our favourite projects are where we can help personalise the design – creating schemes that are special and really tailored to the client rather than looking overly designed or glitzy.

Who or what have been your major influences and role models?

So many influences! Our two founders are well travelled and have both lived and worked in Asia, America and Europe so they bring a wealth of inspiration from that – but also closer to home in art, architecture, food, fashion – inspiration is everywhere. We are fortunate to work alongside a lot of small UK manufacturers and artisans which informs our work too. We have some industry role models – there are many architects and designers out there leading their own way and social media allows everyone to tap into that.

In developing a style for a client’s property who takes the lead or is it a collaborative effort?

Typically it is very collaborative for us, projects can sometimes take 1, 2 or 3 years so working well together is key. We focus very much on

our relationships with clients, contractors and suppliers. We take time to understand what a client wants to achieve and their personal tastes and then we are able to steer them towards a final design. We know that it is our job to pull the project together, provide a great result and give good client service.

Is there a project that you are most proud of? We have been proud of all our projects in their own way – we can look back at each one and remember the pivotal moments, and all of them have pushed us in different ways. Our chateau project in France continues to be a very proud one. We were bought in as the house sale was being finalised so we have helped shape the project and design from the start. There was also a huge concentration on taking the building back to its simplest, most original form, exposing beams, stonework, designing huge limestone fireplaces – so its been an incredible and sometimes painstaking task.. but extremely rewarding to see how far it has come. We also completed a finca in Mallorca last year which involved some of the same, bringing an authenticity back to the home, reworking the space, and using local suppliers and lots of natural materials and textures. Our UK based work is similar in that way in that we always look for authenticity and relevance to the area and the clients needs.

You recently opened a shop, tell us about this. We were increasingly designing one off pieces for projects – usually furniture but also décor wise – we work with many UK workshops and some really special suppliers of fabrics, joinery, ceramics etc. From this we realised that we could design a few key simple pieces that anyone could use even if you didn’t want a full design service. All the pieces are stylish, versatile and will fit in different interior schemes – they are classic and high quality and its great to support British manufacturing.
